Quick Summary

The West Branch is running at 420 cfs at Hale Eddy after a significant rise from yesterday's 298 cfs, driven by runoff from last night's and morning's rain. Cannonsville releases have been trimmed to 150 cfs, down from 200 cfs, and the system continues falling from the October 12 peak of 722 cfs. Water temperature holds steady at 53 degrees, well within trout comfort range. A cold front is moving in with a high near 48 and north winds of 10-20 mph, making dry fly presentations difficult through midday. Nymphing and streamers are the most productive early, before the wind ramps up.

Weather

Forecast calls for a high near 48 F, well below seasonal norms. Light rain in the morning is clearing to sunny skies by afternoon. North winds will gust between 10 and 20 mph, the strongest component for fly control this morning. Sunday brings a warming trend with a high near 56 and calm winds, which should make tomorrow's fishing more comfortable. Overnight lows will approach 24 F with widespread frost expected.

River Notes

Flows at Hale Eddy jumped from 298 cfs to 420 cfs after yesterday's rain added runoff. The system is still dropping from its October 12 crest of 722 cfs, so while conditions are higher than ideal for wading, the river remains well below flood stage. The slight stain from morning runoff should settle by midday as the rain ends. The Cannonsville release has been cut to 150 cfs, which will help keep the West Branch manageable through the weekend. The cold front moving in will make the water feel colder to waders, and the 24 F overnight low will bring frost. Dress for the temperature, not just the water.

Recommended Flies

CategoryFlySizeNotes
NymphsPheasant Tail Nymph16-18Primary pattern for BWO and general early-day nymphing
NymphsCopper Head Nymph14-16Effective in stained water with slight current
Wet FliesSilver Dove14-16Traditional fall wet fly for West Branch drifts
StreamersOlive Bugger6-8Strip through seams and inside bends, especially on cloudy mornings
DriesDun Olive16-18Afternoon BWO match when wind calms slightly

Tactics

Start with nymphs or a small streamer in the slower seams and inside bends before the wind kicks up. A standard 9-foot leader with a heavy butt section helps turn over patterns into 10-20 mph gusts, but a longer 12-to-14-foot tippet section may be necessary in stronger gusts. Fish below the surface through midday. If fish show on rising insects by mid to late afternoon and wind eases slightly, switch to a single Dun Olive on a dry-dropper rig. The slight stain favors subsurface presentations over sight-fishing. Boat access at Hale Eddy remains a viable option when wadeability becomes too limited at the higher flows.
